Op/ed: A look at our entrepreneurial ecosystem

Entrepreneurship is a word we hear often, with good reason: More people are choosing to forgo the predictable paycheck as an employee for the opportunity to spin their idea into a tangible business of their own.
For the first time in five years, the Startup Activity Index rose in 2015, showing the largest year-over-year increase in the past two decades, according to the Kauffman Index 2015, Startup Activity National Trends. In 2014, the report states, roughly eight out of every 10 new entrepreneurs were not previously unemployed.

California officials are working hard to turn around the state’s image as a difficult business partner. Clearly, doing business here is not all smiley faces, but it’s not the curmudgeon it once was, either.
A series of robust business incentives help account for the positive change. When combined with the commitments of our regional economic development partners and our extraordinary quality of life, these incentives make California a far more competitive place to do business than is popularly thought. Yet, admittedly, the state does have more work to do to assure that we can maintain a strong economy.

Organization helps sustain private-public collaborations

As the new president and chief executive officer of the Economic Development Collaborative-Ventura County, I see how private-public collaborations can enhance Ventura County’s vibrant economy. EDC-VC is dedicated to helping sustain this vitality by crafting strategies that promote jobs and economic growth as well as raise overall productivity and incomes. I credit the leadership of my predecessor Michele Pettes and the board of directors for building and sustaining an organization so effective in this role.
